Understanding Tile Slip Resistance (DCOF) Ratings

Understanding Tile Slip Resistance (DCOF) Ratings

What DCOF actually measures

The Dynamic Coefficient of Friction (DCOF) rating measures how much resistance a tile surface offers underfoot when wet. The American National Standards Institute recommends a minimum DCOF of 0.42 for tile used in areas that will get wet, like bathroom floors and shower pans.

Where it matters most

Shower floors and pans are the highest-priority application for slip resistance, followed by bathroom floors generally, entryways in snowy climates, and any commercial application with public foot traffic. A living room floor, by contrast, rarely needs a high DCOF rating.

Finish affects the rating as much as material

A polished natural stone or glossy porcelain can have a noticeably lower DCOF than the same material in a honed or matte finish. If slip resistance matters for your application, we'll check the specific finish's rating, not just assume based on material type.
