Is Large-Format Tile Worth the Extra Cost?

Is Large-Format Tile Worth the Extra Cost?

The appeal is real

A large-format floor with minimal grout lines genuinely does read as more modern and makes a room feel larger — this isn't just a trend, it's a legitimate visual effect backed by how much less the eye has to process across a continuous surface.

The subfloor has to cooperate

Large-format tile has almost no tolerance for an uneven subfloor. Lippage — where adjacent tile edges sit at slightly different heights — becomes far more visible and far more likely to catch a stubbed toe at larger sizes. Budget for proper self-leveling underlayment if your subfloor isn't already flat.

Ask about installer experience specifically

Setting large-format tile requires different tools (suction lifters, large-format mortar, leveling clips) and a different technique than standard tile. This is one category where installer experience genuinely shows up in the finished product.
